PSA Antwerp has strengthened its handling capacity with the addition of five new mega ship-to-shore (STS) cranes at the Europa Terminal in the Port of Antwerp-Bruges.

The newly installed cranes are designed to handle the latest generation of ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs), offering extended outreach and higher lifting capacity. The investment is expected to improve productivity, reduce vessel turnaround times and enhance the terminal’s ability to accommodate growing container volumes.

According to the operator, the cranes feature advanced automation systems and energy-efficient technologies, aligning with broader sustainability goals at the port. The move comes as global carriers continue deploying larger ships on major trade lanes, requiring terminals to upgrade infrastructure accordingly.

Europa Terminal plays a key role in PSA Antwerp’s network, serving as a major gateway for European imports and exports. The expansion is aimed at ensuring the terminal remains competitive amid evolving shipping alliances and capacity deployment strategies.

Port authorities noted that the additional cranes will not only increase operational flexibility but also strengthen Antwerp’s position as a leading container hub in Northern Europe.

With the installation complete, PSA Antwerp expects improved berth productivity and enhanced service levels for shipping lines and logistics partners operating through the port.
