Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Haldia Bulk Terminal (HBT) at the Haldia Dock Complex in West Bengal, a major step toward strengthening maritime infrastructure on India’s eastern seaboard.
Developed by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ), the fully automated dry bulk handling terminal has an annual cargo handling capacity of about 4 million metric tonnes. Situated along the Hooghly River, the facility is designed to efficiently handle imported coal and other dry bulk commodities required by industries across eastern India.
The project was implemented under a Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) concession model by HDC Bulk Terminal Ltd. Construction began in July 2023 and has now been successfully completed and commissioned.
Equipped with fully mechanised cargo handling systems and direct rail evacuation, the terminal is expected to enable faster cargo movement, reduce handling losses and lower environmental impact compared to conventional bulk handling systems.
The new facility is expected to significantly improve logistics efficiency in the eastern region, benefiting industries in West Bengal, Odisha and Jharkhand by strengthening bulk cargo handling capabilities and ensuring smoother supply chains.
With the commissioning of the Haldia Bulk Terminal, India gains a modern infrastructure asset that aligns with the government’s vision of reducing logistics costs, improving port efficiency and enhancing multimodal connectivity across key industrial corridors.
