The Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) has classified the Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) Lila Jamnagar, marking a significant addition to its fleet register and reinforcing its presence in the global tanker segment.

The classification of Lila Jamnagar highlights IRS’s growing role in providing technical and safety assurance services for large ocean-going vessels. As a VLCC, the vessel is designed to transport substantial volumes of crude oil across long-haul international routes, making compliance with stringent safety and operational standards critical.

Officials from the Indian Register of Shipping stated that the vessel has been assessed in line with international classification norms, covering structural integrity, machinery systems, and safety protocols. The certification ensures that Lila Jamnagar meets global standards required for commercial operations.

Industry observers note that the inclusion of such large tankers reflects increasing confidence in Indian classification services within the global maritime ecosystem. It also signals the expansion of India’s footprint in high-value shipping segments such as crude oil transportation.

The move aligns with broader efforts to strengthen India’s maritime capabilities and support the growth of its shipping industry. Classification by a domestic body like the Indian Register of Shipping is seen as a step toward enhancing self-reliance in maritime services.

VLCCs play a crucial role in global energy supply chains, enabling efficient transportation of crude oil between major producing and consuming regions. The addition of Lila Jamnagar to the IRS register underscores the importance of maintaining high technical standards in this segment.

With increasing demand for safe and efficient tanker operations, the Indian Register of Shipping is expected to continue expanding its portfolio, supporting both domestic and international shipping requirements.
