Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) has reduced the number of stranded containers by nearly 50%, signaling a significant easing of congestion at the country’s busiest container gateway.

The progress comes as Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal conducted a review of port operations, assessing measures taken to address the backlog and improve cargo movement efficiency.

Officials said coordinated efforts between port authorities, terminal operators, shipping lines, and customs have played a key role in accelerating clearances. Enhanced yard management, faster documentation processes, and extended working hours have contributed to the reduction in container pile-up.

The congestion had earlier raised concerns among exporters and importers due to delays in cargo evacuation and increased logistics costs. The recent improvement is expected to restore confidence among trade stakeholders and facilitate smoother supply chain operations.

During the review, the minister emphasized the need for sustained efforts to prevent recurrence of such disruptions, including better planning, digitalization, and closer coordination among stakeholders.

Industry participants welcomed the development, noting that improved throughput at JNPA will help stabilize container flows and reduce turnaround times for vessels and cargo alike.

With continued monitoring and operational enhancements, authorities aim to fully normalize port operations and strengthen efficiency at one of India’s most critical trade gateways.
