Antwerpen demonstrates ammonia dual-fuel technology in commercial operation on China–India voyage

July 25, 2026: EXMAR has announced a significant milestone in the decarbonization of the shipping industry with the successful completion of ANTWERPEN’s first commercial voyage powered by ammonia fuel.

During the vessel’s voyage from China to India, ANTWERPEN successfully operated on its ammonia dual-fuel system, performing fully in line with the company’s design expectations. The achievement demonstrates that ammonia can be safely and effectively used as a marine fuel in commercial shipping operations.

The successful voyage marks an important step in validating ammonia as a viable low-carbon alternative fuel for the maritime industry. EXMAR said it will continue working closely with its technology partners to further optimize and fine-tune the vessel’s systems as operational experience grows.

The company also acknowledged the dedication and professionalism of the ship’s crew, whose pioneering efforts played a crucial role in the successful deployment of ammonia fuel during the commercial voyage.

The milestone reinforces EXMAR’s commitment to advancing innovative and sustainable shipping solutions as the maritime sector accelerates its transition toward cleaner fuels and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
