India and Mauritius have signed agreements establishing a long-term arrangement for the supply of petroleum products, strengthening energy cooperation between the two countries amid continuing global fuel-market uncertainty.

The agreements were signed during the visit of India’s Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri to Mauritius. They include a government-to-government memorandum of understanding on oil and gas cooperation and a separate sales and purchase agreement between Mauritius and Indian Oil Corporation (IOC).

Under the sales and purchase agreement, Indian Oil will supply Mauritius with key refined petroleum products, including petrol, diesel and aviation fuel. The agreement is intended to provide the island nation with a more stable and reliable source of essential fuels.

Mauritius is heavily dependent on imported energy, making reliable access to petroleum products particularly important for its economy. Recent disruptions and volatility in global energy markets have increased the need for secure and diversified supply arrangements.

The latest agreement deepens the longstanding energy partnership between India and Mauritius. It also expands the role of Indian refiners in supplying petroleum products to overseas markets, leveraging India’s substantial refining capacity and established export infrastructure.

Puri said Mauritius is the first country outside South Asia to conclude such a petroleum supply arrangement with an Indian public-sector oil company, underlining the strategic significance of the agreement for India’s expanding energy partnerships in the Indian Ocean region.

The two countries have not disclosed the volumes, pricing arrangements or other commercial and financial terms of the agreement.

For Mauritius, the arrangement could help improve fuel-supply security and reduce exposure to disruptions in international markets. For India, it creates an opportunity to expand exports of refined petroleum products while strengthening economic and strategic ties with an important Indian Ocean partner.

The agreement also comes at a time when India is seeking to strengthen its position as a major regional supplier of refined fuels. Indian refiners have increasingly supplied petrol, diesel and aviation fuel to international markets, supported by the country’s large refining base and strategic location.

The new long-term arrangement is therefore expected to support Mauritius’ energy security while reinforcing India’s role as a reliable petroleum supplier in the Indian Ocean region.
