A consortium comprising an Adani Group firm, India’s state-owned NMDC Ltd., and Brazilian mining giant Vale S.A. has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop a major iron ore blending and handling hub at Gangavaram Port in Andhra Pradesh.

Under the agreement, the partners will collaborate on establishing infrastructure to efficiently blend, store, and dispatch iron ore cargo, enhancing operational capabilities at one of India’s deep-sea ports. The initiative is aimed at supporting the growth of India’s steel and mining sectors by improving export logistics and enabling more flexible cargo handling arrangements.

The proposed hub will facilitate the blending of different grades of iron ore to meet the specific quality requirements of domestic and international buyers, potentially reducing the need for separate processing facilities inland. By centralising blending and handling operations at the port, stakeholders expect to cut turnaround times for vessels and improve the competitiveness of Indian iron ore on the global market.

Officials from the three signatories said the partnership reflects a shared commitment to boosting the efficiency of India’s mineral supply chains and tapping into rising demand from steelmakers worldwide.

Representatives highlighted that Gangavaram Port’s deep-draft facilities and strategic location on the east coast make it well-suited for large-scale bulk operations. Once operational, the hub is expected to attract increased cargo volumes and create new opportunities for export-oriented trade in minerals.

The MoU sets the stage for detailed project planning, investment mobilisation, and regulatory clearances, with further announcements expected as the partners move toward implementation. Industry analysts said the collaboration could strengthen India’s position as a key supplier of iron ore in global markets while supporting infrastructure development in the region.
