Asia-Europe container volumes surged by 48.5% in February as shippers accelerated cargo movements ahead of and during the Lunar New Year period, creating a sharp spike in demand across one of the world’s busiest trade lanes.

The strong growth was driven by exporters rushing shipments before factory shutdowns in key Asian manufacturing hubs during the holiday season, followed by a rebound in cargo bookings as production resumed. The Lunar New Year traditionally causes significant shifts in supply chain activity, with companies adjusting schedules to avoid disruptions.

Shipping industry sources said the volume jump placed added pressure on vessel capacity, equipment availability and port operations across Asia-Europe routes. Higher demand during the period also supported freight rates and tighter space conditions on several services.

Analysts noted that the February surge reflects both seasonal front-loading and improving trade momentum between Asian exporters and European importers. Consumer goods, electronics, machinery, textiles and retail inventory replenishment were among the key cargo categories contributing to stronger volumes.

The sharp increase may also indicate that businesses are rebuilding inventories earlier than usual amid concerns over supply chain reliability, geopolitical risks and transit delays. Many importers continue to prioritize forward planning after recent years of logistics disruptions.

Despite the strong February performance, market participants cautioned that monthly container volumes can be highly volatile around the Lunar New Year period due to shifting holiday dates and temporary production slowdowns. Longer-term trends will depend on European demand, manufacturing output in Asia and global economic conditions.

The 48.5% jump nonetheless highlights the enduring importance of the Asia-Europe corridor and the significant seasonal influence the Lunar New Year continues to exert on global container shipping patterns.
