Global container carrier CMA CGM has announced the implementation of new Port Congestion Surcharges (PCS) and Peak Season Surcharges (PSS) across several trade routes, citing continued operational disruptions at ports and rising seasonal cargo demand.

The company said the surcharges are aimed at offsetting the additional costs associated with vessel delays, longer container dwell times, and network inefficiencies caused by congestion at major gateways. Peak season charges have also been introduced to manage increased cargo volumes typically seen during the second half of the year.

According to CMA CGM, the new fees will apply to selected export and import trades, with surcharge levels varying by route, cargo type, and destination. The carrier noted that the measures are part of its ongoing efforts to maintain schedule reliability and service quality amid challenging market conditions.

Port congestion remains a concern across several regions due to vessel bunching, terminal capacity constraints, and equipment imbalances. These disruptions have increased turnaround times and operating costs for shipping lines, prompting carriers to adjust pricing structures.

Industry observers expect other major carriers to continue reviewing surcharge mechanisms as supply chain pressures and seasonal demand patterns evolve. Shippers are being advised to closely monitor carrier notices and factor the additional charges into their logistics planning and transportation budgets.

CMA CGM stated that the surcharges will take effect in accordance with applicable trade regulations and tariff publication requirements, with detailed implementation dates and rates communicated through customer advisories and local offices.
