A consortium comprising COSCO SHIPPING Ports, COSCO SHIPPING Bulk, and PTP Ibérica has been awarded the concession for the development of a new multipurpose terminal at the Port of Tarragona in Spain, marking a significant expansion of COSCO SHIPPING Ports’ presence in the European Mediterranean region.
The award follows a public tender process conducted by the Port Authority of Tarragona. While the consortium has received the award notification and participated in the official award ceremony, the concession remains subject to the incorporation of a project company, execution of the concession agreement, and completion of the necessary regulatory approvals and legal formalities.
The new terminal will be developed at the Andalucía Wharf and will function as a multipurpose facility capable of handling containers, general cargo, vehicles, RoRo traffic, and other cargo types. The project will also be integrated with the adjacent La Boella rail-port terminal, providing seamless sea-rail connectivity and enhancing intermodal logistics capabilities.
The total investment in the project is estimated at approximately EUR 144.6 million, including applicable taxes and interest. COSCO SHIPPING Ports will contribute capital in proportion to its equity stake in the consortium.
Once operational, the terminal is expected to handle a diversified cargo portfolio, supporting containerised freight, general cargo, automotive logistics, RoRo operations, and rail-borne cargo, further strengthening Tarragona’s position as a key logistics gateway in the Mediterranean.
The project represents another strategic milestone in COSCO SHIPPING Ports’ efforts to expand its international terminal network and reinforce its integrated port and logistics services across Europe.
The company also noted that, if the project proceeds, it is expected to constitute a discloseable transaction under the Hong Kong Stock Exchange Listing Rules, for which a separate announcement has been issued.
