Hutchison Port Holdings Trust (HPH Trust) has announced the launch of its first Autonomous Truck (AT) fleet in Hong Kong, introducing driverless, zero-emission vehicles designed for container transport within its terminals. The rollout is being positioned as a major step toward building a smarter and more sustainable port ecosystem in the city.

The launch ceremony was officiated by Liu Chun San, Under Secretary for Transport and Logistics of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, alongside Ivor Chow, Chief Executive Officer of Hutchison Port Holdings Trust and Managing Director of Hongkong International Terminals.

The newly deployed autonomous trucks operate without driver cabins and are powered by artificial intelligence systems, including binocular cameras, advanced sensors, and precision positioning technology. According to the operator, the vehicles are capable of 24/7 operations in all weather conditions and are equipped with obstacle detection and emergency response capabilities. They are designed to function in “true” mixed traffic environments alongside conventional port vehicles.

Speaking at the event, Liu Chun San described the initiative as a key milestone for Hong Kong’s container terminal development and a significant step in the city’s transition toward smart port infrastructure. He said the project supports the government’s vision for green and smart shipping while promoting sustainable development in the maritime sector.

Ivor Chow said the launch represents more than a new fleet of vehicles, calling it “a new generation of port technology.” He highlighted that the AI-powered, 5G-connected autonomous trucks are intended to integrate seamlessly with existing operations, supporting Hong Kong’s role as a global maritime hub and aligning with broader policy directions for green port development.

Currently, six autonomous trucks are in operation at Terminal 4. HPH Trust also plans to expand the fleet and introduce additional green technologies, including electric trucks, electric reach stackers, and battery swapping infrastructure to further reduce emissions across terminal operations.

The initiative underscores the operator’s push toward automation and environmental sustainability, setting a new benchmark for port logistics innovation in Hong Kong’s shipping industry.
