Sarbananda Sonowal chaired a high-level review meeting on the progress of Indian Maritime University, highlighting the institution’s transformation into a globally recognised centre for maritime education, research and workforce development.

During the review, the Union Minister said IMU has evolved into a hub for research, innovation and industry collaboration, playing a pivotal role in supporting India’s ambition to become a leading global maritime nation. He emphasised that the university is strengthening the country’s maritime talent pipeline while fostering closer engagement with domestic and international industry stakeholders.

The university has recorded significant growth in recent years, with registrations for the IMU Common Entrance Test (IMU-CET) increasing five-fold since 2014. Women cadet enrolment has surged 18 times over the same period, reflecting greater gender diversity in India’s maritime sector. Since 2021, IMU has also forged more than 60 academic and industry partnerships across India and abroad, enhancing research, training and global collaboration.

The review meeting underscored the government’s continued focus on strengthening maritime education and developing a skilled workforce capable of supporting India’s expanding ports, shipping and logistics sectors, in line with the country’s long-term maritime growth strategy.
