India has stepped up safety measures for its seafarers and merchant vessels operating in the Gulf region as tensions continue to simmer across key maritime corridors.

Officials from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways said the situation in and around the Persian Gulf is being closely monitored in coordination with shipping companies, maritime regulators and international agencies. Enhanced advisories have been issued to vessels transiting sensitive areas, particularly near the Strait of Hormuz.

The Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping) has instructed shipowners and managers to undertake detailed risk assessments before sailing through high-risk zones. Measures include strengthened onboard security protocols, continuous tracking of vessels, emergency communication drills and updated insurance coverage.

Shipping companies have also been advised to ensure that crew members are fully briefed on contingency procedures and that ships maintain regular contact with maritime security centres. Additional reporting requirements have been introduced for Indian-flagged vessels operating in the region.

India has one of the world’s largest seafarer workforces, with thousands of crew members serving on vessels that traverse Gulf waters — a vital route for global energy and cargo flows. Authorities stressed that safeguarding the lives of Indian seafarers remains a top priority.

While reiterating its call for restraint and de-escalation in the region, the government said it stands ready to extend all necessary support to Indian crew and shipping interests should the security environment deteriorate further.
