Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is set to visit India next week, with discussions on the strategically vital Chabahar Port expected to be a key focus of high-level talks with Indian leadership.

Araghchi is scheduled to meet senior Indian officials, including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and other ministers to review cooperation on port operations and regional trade connectivity. His visit, likely spanning January 15-16, underscores the growing importance of Chabahar in the India-Iran partnership.

Chabahar Port, on Iran’s Gulf of Oman coast, has been a cornerstone of bilateral engagement, offering India and its partners a crucial gateway for trade with Afghanistan, Central Asia and Eurasia while bypassing traditional routes through Pakistan. India Ports Global Limited is managing the port under a long-term agreement, and the facility has gained added significance amid shifting geopolitical and economic dynamics in the region.

A US sanctions waiver allowing India’s continued involvement at Chabahar is set to expire in the coming months, adding urgency to the talks that will also review future cooperation frameworks and broader strategic ties.

Officials say both sides aim to strengthen connectivity and trade linkages, with Chabahar expected to play an increasingly central role in regional supply chains, including potential links with the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC).

The visit comes at a time of evolving regional geopolitics and sustained efforts by India to diversify its trade routes and enhance economic engagement with West Asia and beyond.
