India is gearing up for a significant expansion in grape cultivation and exports as newly developed grape varieties gain traction among growers and exporters. The introduction of these varieties is expected to enhance productivity, improve fruit quality and strengthen India’s position in global grape markets.

Agriculture experts say the new grape cultivars are designed to offer better yields, improved resistance to pests and diseases, and longer shelf life—qualities that are crucial for international shipments. These characteristics make the varieties particularly suitable for export markets that demand consistent quality and longer transit durability.

Farmers in major grape-growing regions such as Maharashtra and Karnataka have started adopting the new varieties, encouraged by strong export demand and the potential for higher returns. Maharashtra alone accounts for the majority of India’s grape exports, supplying markets across Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

Exporters believe the shift toward improved varieties will help India maintain quality standards required by overseas buyers while expanding shipments to new destinations. The improved shelf life of the fruit also makes it more suitable for long-distance shipping by sea, which could reduce reliance on air cargo and lower logistics costs.

Industry stakeholders expect grape acreage under the new varieties to expand steadily over the next few seasons. With growing global demand for fresh fruits and India’s strengthening horticulture sector, exporters are optimistic that the new grape varieties will drive the next phase of growth in the country’s agricultural exports.
