Inaugurating a new campus of the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) at Palaj in Gandhinagar, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Saturday that India will be in a position to export APIs (active pharmaceutical ingredient) and KSM (key starting material) in next 10 years.

“Within the next 10 years, I believe that India will not only become self-reliant, but will also reach a stage where it can export API and KSM,” said Shah during his speech at NIPER.

He added that NIPERs at Mohali, Guwahati and Gandhinagar are fully functional, while those at Hajipur, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Rae Bareli are under construction. Gujarat government has given 60 acre for the NIPER campus at a token annual rent of Rs 1.

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, who was also present at the event, said: “India has started producing 45 APIs after China stopped providing key ingredients during the Covid-19 pandemic.”

He added that India was importing 70 per cent of the medical devices and the government will spend Rs 100 crore for creating a centre of excellence for medical devices at NIPER in Gandhinagar.
“India is the pharmacy of the world, as it accounts for 20 per cent of the global pharmaceutical production. If the world consumes five tablets, then one is a generic tablet manufactured in India. If United States consumes four tablets, one of it is made in India. We are number one in production of generic medicines and vaccine production, but we are lagging behind in research and innovation,” said Mandaviya, adding that imported patented doses for muscular dystrophy costs crores.
