Mango exporters in Malda are urging authorities to improve air cargo connectivity to help expand overseas shipments and unlock higher returns for the region’s premium fruit growers.
Traders say limited access to efficient air freight services has constrained exports of popular Malda mango varieties, which are highly valued in international markets for their flavour and quality. Faster air transport is considered essential for preserving freshness and extending shelf life during long-distance deliveries.
Exporters are seeking better cargo linkages through nearby airports, dedicated perishable handling facilities, and more frequent freight capacity during the peak mango season. They argue that improved logistics could significantly raise export volumes to destinations in the Middle East, Europe, and Southeast Asia.
Industry representatives also note that enhanced air connectivity would benefit farmers by reducing wastage, improving price realisation, and creating stronger access to premium buyers abroad.
Stakeholders expect that targeted investments in cold-chain systems, airport cargo infrastructure, and streamlined export clearances could help position Malda as a stronger player in India’s fruit export market.
