Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the world’s largest container carrier, has announced a significant enhancement to its Iroko service with the introduction of a new direct port call at Cape Town, South Africa. The strategic upgrade aims to strengthen trade connectivity between West Africa, South Africa, and global markets while offering enhanced schedule reliability and improved transit times for shippers.

With the addition of Cape Town, the Iroko service will now provide more efficient links for exporters and importers, particularly supporting South Africa’s agricultural, manufacturing, and retail sectors. The direct call is expected to streamline cargo movement, reduce transshipment requirements, and offer greater operational flexibility for customers.

The service enhancement comes as demand for containerised cargo in Southern Africa continues to grow, driven by rising trade volumes and evolving supply chain needs. MSC’s decision underscores its commitment to reinforcing its Africa network and providing resilient, customer-centric shipping solutions.

Further details on rotation adjustments, effective dates, and transit schedules are expected to be shared soon by MSC through customer advisories.

The upgraded Iroko service is anticipated to boost regional connectivity and support Cape Town’s position as a key gateway for South African trade.
