Hambantota International Port has expanded its roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) handling capabilities with the opening of a new vehicle yard, aimed at accommodating growing volumes of automotive cargo moving through the Sri Lankan gateway.

The newly developed yard significantly increases the port’s storage capacity for vehicles, allowing it to handle higher volumes of car carriers and improve operational efficiency in the Ro-Ro segment. Port officials said the facility is designed to streamline vehicle handling, parking and dispatch operations, reducing turnaround times for vessels and cargo.

Hambantota International Port has been positioning itself as a key regional hub for automotive transshipment, serving major shipping routes connecting Asia, the Middle East and Africa. The port has seen steady growth in vehicle traffic in recent years as global car manufacturers and logistics providers expand their supply chains across emerging markets.

The new Ro-Ro yard includes expanded parking areas, improved traffic flow systems and enhanced cargo management infrastructure to support the safe and efficient movement of vehicles within the port premises.

Officials noted that the investment reflects the port’s broader strategy to strengthen its role in the global automotive logistics sector while supporting rising demand for vehicle transshipment in the region.

With the additional capacity now operational, Hambantota International Port expects to attract more Ro-Ro vessel calls and further consolidate its position as a major automotive handling hub in South Asia.
