Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the ₹3,000-crore Kumar Bhaskar Varma Bridge over the Brahmaputra River on Saturday, marking a major milestone in Assam’s infrastructure development and regional connectivity.

The 1.24-km, six-lane bridge connects Guwahati with North Guwahati and has been constructed across one of India’s most challenging riverine terrains. Designed as an extradosed bridge — the first of its kind in Northeast India — the structure combines enhanced strength and durability with faster construction timelines, making it a significant engineering achievement.

According to Rohit Singla, Director of SPS Construction India, the project represents a key addition to Assam’s long-term transportation network. “Our role, as the executing agency, was to translate that vision into a durable, safe, and functional structure. We are grateful for the guidance and cooperation of the authorities throughout the project lifecycle, and we believe the bridge will serve the region’s mobility needs for many years to come,” he said.

Unlike traditional suspension bridges, the modern extradosed design provides optimal structural performance over the Brahmaputra’s wide span while ensuring efficiency in execution. The project required extensive planning, coordination, and careful construction under varying river conditions.

Officials said the bridge is expected to significantly reduce travel time, ease traffic congestion, and enable smoother movement for daily commuters, freight traffic, and long-distance travellers. It also links key transport corridors and aligns with Assam’s broader infrastructure roadmap.

A senior state government official highlighted that the bridge will provide easier access to several national institutions and cultural landmarks in North Guwahati. The project is also expected to support plans to develop North Guwahati as a twin city and drive overall growth in the state capital region.

Construction was closely monitored by authorities to ensure adherence to safety, quality, and environmental standards throughout the project cycle.

With the commissioning of the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Bridge, Assam strengthens its transport backbone while reinforcing connectivity across the Northeast region.
