The Port of Bilbao has recorded its strongest first-half growth in cargo throughput in 22 years, reflecting robust trade activity and increased demand across key cargo segments. The performance underscores the port’s growing role as a major logistics gateway for Spain and international maritime trade.

Growth during the first six months was driven by higher volumes of containerised cargo, general cargo and liquid bulk, supported by improved industrial activity and stronger import-export flows. The port also benefited from expanded shipping services and sustained demand from manufacturing, energy and consumer goods sectors.

Port authorities attributed the strong results to continued investments in infrastructure, terminal efficiency and digitalisation, which have enhanced operational performance and cargo handling capabilities. Ongoing improvements have enabled the port to accommodate rising vessel traffic while maintaining reliable and efficient services.

The Port of Bilbao continues to strengthen its connectivity with major global trade routes through regular liner services linking Europe with Asia, the Americas and other international markets. Its strategic location and multimodal transport links have further reinforced its position as a preferred hub for shippers and logistics providers.

Looking ahead, the port aims to sustain its growth momentum by expanding capacity, advancing sustainability initiatives and supporting resilient supply chains. The record first-half performance highlights the Port of Bilbao’s competitiveness and its increasing contribution to regional and international trade.
