Slovenia’s Port of Koper is advancing its decarbonisation and digitalisation strategy with another procurement of four electric Rubber-Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes from Konecranes.
This follows a similar order from 2024, reinforcing a longstanding technical partnership and underlining Luka Koper’s commitment to modernising its container terminal with the latest zero-emission technologies.
Expected for handover in the second quarter of 2026, these new units will take the place of several older diesel-powered cranes, cementing the port’s shift to all-electric handling in the stack yard.
By opting for Konecranes’ e-RTGs, which draw power via cable reel from the local grid and supplement that connection with onboard batteries for short stack transitions, the port targets lower emissions and greater operational safety.
Each crane will also be fitted with Konecranes’ Truck Lift Prevention technology, an automated safety feature designed to minimise risks during the container lifting process, further securing yard efficiency in increasingly busy operations.
Explaining the rationale behind the repeat order, Edvin Boskin, Container Terminal Technical Manager at Luka Koper, said: “This latest order builds on a relationship that has grown over many years, based on proven results and shared eco-efficiency goals. The new Konecranes RTGs support our modernisation program by combining reliable performance with lower emissions.”
Koper already runs one of the Adriatic region’s most advanced fleets, comprising over 30 Konecranes RTGs and several rail-mounted gantry cranes, including a retrofitted machine with remote operation capability.
The arrival of these new electric RTGs is expected to streamline maintenance, scale up eco-performance, and strengthen the port’s role as a natural gateway to Central and Eastern Europe.
Philipp Reiter, Regional Sales Manager for Konecranes Port Solutions, highlighted the significance of the investment: “By ordering the same type of electric Konecranes RTGs as last year, Luka Koper can scale its modernisation programme even faster. This repeat order shows how ports can enhance daily operations and reach eco-efficiency targets.”
The transaction is part of the broader Ecolifting concept at Konecranes, a sustainability push to help customers reduce their carbon footprint while improving productivity and safety.
