Chinese shipbuilder Shanghai Donghai Shipbuilding Industry Co Ltd (SDHI) has moved to revive and complete construction of five offshore support vessels (OSVs) that were left unfinished from its earlier operational phase.
The vessels, which remained pending amid financial and restructuring challenges in the company’s previous ownership cycle, are now being brought back into active construction under renewed management oversight. Industry sources indicate that hull works and key onboard systems are at advanced stages, with outfitting and sea trials expected to follow in phases.
The five OSVs are designed to cater to offshore oil and gas exploration and production activities, offering capabilities such as anchor handling, platform supply, and subsea support operations. Once delivered, the vessels are expected to support regional and international offshore energy projects.
SDHI’s decision to complete the legacy vessels is seen as part of a broader strategy to strengthen its orderbook, optimise yard capacity, and rebuild market confidence. The move may also help recover previously locked-in capital and fulfil contractual obligations linked to earlier agreements.
The offshore support vessel segment has witnessed renewed interest amid steady upstream activity and growing offshore wind installations, creating fresh demand for modern, fuel-efficient support tonnage.
Completion timelines for the five vessels are expected to be announced following final technical evaluations and coordination with prospective owners or charterers.
