Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal has laid the foundation stones for river lighthouses at Bogibeel, Pandu, Silghat and Biswanath in Assam, marking a significant step towards strengthening inland waterways infrastructure on the Brahmaputra River.

Highlighting the rapid transformation of India’s maritime sector, the minister said the development reflects the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to build modern, efficient and sustainable transport infrastructure across the country. He noted that the initiative is part of the government’s broader efforts to enhance inland waterways and improve logistics connectivity, particularly in the Northeast.

The proposed river lighthouses will enhance navigational safety for vessels operating on the mighty Brahmaputra, which is one of India’s most important inland waterway routes. Equipped with modern lighting and navigation systems, the facilities will help vessels safely navigate the river’s challenging currents and changing channels.

Officials said the project will play a crucial role in strengthening inland water transport, improving cargo movement, and supporting regional trade and connectivity in Assam and the wider Northeast region. By improving safety and reliability for vessel operations, the initiative is expected to encourage greater use of waterways as an efficient and environmentally sustainable mode of transport.

The development also aligns with the government’s push to promote inland waterways as a key pillar of India’s logistics network, while supporting economic growth and connectivity in the region.
