Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, inaugurated India’s first-ever Maritime Simulation Centre at the AMET Knowledge Park in Thenpattinam, near Chennai. The state-of-the-art facility has been established through a long-standing collaboration between the Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET) and global logistics leader A.P. Moller-Maersk.

Developed at an investment of INR 13.5 crore, with the A.P. Moller Foundation contributing approximately INR 6.5 crore, the new simulation centre marks a major leap forward in India’s maritime training capabilities.

Equipped with cutting-edge Full Mission Simulators for deck and engine operations, Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS), and dedicated AR/VR labs, the centre will offer immersive, real-time training for cadets. Aspirants will be able to practice critical seafaring competencies such as watchkeeping, collision avoidance, navigation, and engine troubleshooting in a controlled yet realistic environment.

Speaking at the event, Dr. J. Ramachandran, Founder and Chancellor of AMET University, said the new centre reflects AMET’s long-standing vision of producing world-class maritime professionals. He highlighted the institution’s journey from a modest setup to becoming a globally recognized name in maritime education.

Ms. Nynne Norman Scheuer of Maersk reiterated the company’s commitment to nurturing maritime talent, noting that the 25-year partnership with AMET has consistently focused on bridging the gap between classroom learning and operational realities at sea.

The Maritime Simulation Centre is expected to significantly elevate the readiness of Indian seafarers and further reinforce the country’s position as a key maritime nation. With Maersk’s continued focus on sustainable operations and reduced greenhouse gas emissions, the collaboration also aligns with broader global goals for responsible shipping.

The initiative stands as a milestone in India’s maritime education landscape—preparing future seafarers to meet the evolving demands of the global shipping industry.
