Shri Vijay Kumar, Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, chaired a comprehensive review meeting of India’s Major Ports to assess performance, capacity augmentation initiatives and operational efficiency, reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening the country’s maritime ecosystem.
The high-level meeting brought together Chairpersons and senior officials of major ports to evaluate cargo growth trends, infrastructure expansion progress and measures aimed at enhancing ease of doing business.
Focus on Cargo Growth and Capacity Utilisation
During the review, detailed discussions were held on cargo throughput performance, vessel turnaround time, berth productivity and overall operational benchmarks. Ports were advised to adopt strategic planning to handle projected cargo growth and optimise capacity utilisation.
The Secretary emphasised the need to accelerate ongoing expansion projects to ensure ports are equipped to meet rising domestic and international trade demands. Special attention was given to modernisation of terminals, mechanisation of cargo handling systems and improved multimodal connectivity.
Infrastructure Expansion & Connectivity
Progress of key infrastructure initiatives under the government’s flagship programmes, including Sagarmala and PM Gati Shakti, was reviewed. These initiatives aim to integrate ports with road, rail and inland waterways networks, thereby reducing logistics costs and improving supply chain efficiency.
Officials were directed to ensure timely execution of projects and enhance coordination among stakeholders to avoid delays.
Ease of Doing Business & Digitalisation
The review also highlighted measures to improve ease of doing business for port users through simplified procedures, digital documentation, automation and faster clearances. Emphasis was placed on enhancing transparency and service delivery standards to make Indian ports globally competitive.
The Ministry reiterated the importance of adopting technology-driven solutions and sustainable practices, including green port initiatives and energy-efficient operations.
Maritime Vision & Long-Term Strategy
The review aligns with the broader objectives of Maritime India Vision 2030, which seeks to position India as a leading maritime nation through world-class infrastructure, operational excellence and sustainable growth.
The meeting concluded with a directive to major ports to focus on performance optimisation, infrastructure readiness and customer-centric reforms, reinforcing their role as key drivers of India’s economic growth and global trade ambitions.
