Karnataka Maritime Board has floated a global tender for the development of an all-weather deepwater port at Pavinakakurve village in Uttaraka Kannada district under the public-private partnership (PPP) model.

The Board, an arm of the state government, has estimated the project to cost Rs 3048 crore.

The proposed port will have a capacity to handle 14 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of cargo initially and 40 MTPA in future, according to Board’s CEO Jayaram Raipura. The proposed site is situated on the right bank of the estuarine region of river Sharavathi and river Badagani in Honnavar taluk, he added.

The port will handle iron ore, coal & coking coal, limestone & dolomite, Green Hydrogen, Green Ammonia, Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) and finished steel products. The port would have a modern environment with deep draft berthing facilities for handling of cape-size vessels of up to 1,80,000 DWT capacity.

The board estimates the land required for hosting the backup area facilities at the port at 214 hectares and plans to have the same through reclamation of land using the dredged material from the project.
