The Department of Posts has taken significant strides toward transforming itself into a leading public logistics organization, with a series of modernization initiatives aimed at boosting parcel operations, delivery efficiency, and service reliability across India.
According to a written reply by Union Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, in the Rajya Sabha, the Department is upgrading its nationwide parcel processing and delivery ecosystem with standardized systems to improve speed, transparency, and customer experience.
A key part of the transformation includes the establishment of Nodal Delivery Centres, designed for mechanized and dedicated parcel delivery, strengthening last-mile efficiency. Under the Advanced Postal Technology (APT) 2.0 project, the Department has rolled out real-time delivery updates, OTP-based delivery authentication, and API integration to support seamless coordination with e-commerce players and other major customers.
The Mail and Parcel Optimization Project (MPOP) is driving end-to-end process optimization through automation, standardized workflows, parcel sorters, and advanced tracking capabilities. Alongside these upgrades, India Post is deepening partnerships with several e-commerce and logistics companies, and supporting government ministries—including the Ministry of MSME—for parcel distribution.
To facilitate exports by MSMEs, artisans, self-help groups, and small businesses, especially from rural and semi-urban regions, the Department has so far operationalized 1,013 Dak Ghar Niryat Kendras (DGNKs).
In a major digital initiative, the Department has launched the “Know Your DIGIPIN” application, forming the core of the national Digital Address Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). Further, a new Central Sector Scheme, ‘DHRUVA’, has been finalized to build a Digital Public Infrastructure for Address-as-a-Service (AaaS), recognizing address data management as a crucial foundation for effective governance and inclusive public service delivery.
The Minister noted that the transformation is ongoing and will be implemented in phases, guided by recommendations from the MPOP.
The initiatives mark a significant step in strengthening India Post’s role in the country’s evolving logistics and digital governance landscape.
