Lakshadweep is poised for a significant enhancement of its port infrastructure, with multiple islands scheduled to receive upgraded facilities to improve inter-island marine traffic—potentially mirroring the efficient connectivity model seen in the Maldives.

According to a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal announced that major development works are being planned across several islands. The local administration will upgrade ports at Kalpeni Atoll, Kadmat Island and Kiltan Island, while a Detailed Project Report (DPR) is being prepared for proposed port developments at Chetlat Island, the western side of Kavaratti, Agatti Island and Minicoy Island.

Sonowal detailed the proposed investments, stating that:

    • ₹168.60 crore will be spent on developing the western side port at Kalpeni,
    • ₹141.85 crore for Kadmat, and
    • ₹351 crore for Kiltan.

The development works will be executed by the Cochin Port Authority, with 36 months required for completion of each project, following all necessary clearances and tender processes.

The minister also noted that all western side embarkation jetties across the islands are currently fully operational, with routine annual maintenance carried out by Andaman Lakshadweep Harbour Works (ALHW) using funds provided by the Lakshadweep administration.

Beyond improving local connectivity, the port upgradation is also seen as strategically critical. Sonowal highlighted that defence forces are set to strengthen their presence in the archipelago. The Indian Navy plans to install weapon systems on one of the islands without disturbing the fragile ecosystem, while the Indian Air Force is considering a new airbase at Minicoy to enhance surveillance and regional security.

Lakshadweep currently enjoys regular ferry services from Kochi and flights from Kochi, Bengaluru and Goa, and the upcoming port developments are expected to significantly bolster transport efficiency, tourism potential and strategic readiness in the island territory.
