In a major boost to India’s inland waterways logistics and Assam’s emerging semiconductor ecosystem, the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has successfully facilitated the movement of a massive Over Dimensional Cargo (ODC) consignment through National Waterway–2 (NW-2) on the Brahmaputra River.
The 189.260 metric tonne cargo reached Pandu on Monday and is destined for the Tata Semiconductor Assembly facility in Morigaon district. The consignment is considered critical for strengthening semiconductor manufacturing infrastructure in the state.
The cargo commenced its journey from Diamond Harbour in West Bengal and is being transported aboard MV Chitrangada via the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route (IBPR). After entering Assam through Dhubri, the vessel proceeded upstream along the Brahmaputra. Officials stated that the consignment is scheduled to be unloaded at Silghat, from where it will be transported by road to Morigaon.
The successful handling of such a heavy and specialised cargo underscores the growing capability of India’s inland waterways to manage complex logistics operations, particularly for industrial and infrastructure projects in the Northeast.
IWAI officials highlighted that the operation reflects the authority’s sustained push to promote inland water transport (IWT) as a reliable, cost-effective and environmentally sustainable alternative to road and rail for heavy and over-dimensional cargo movement.
By leveraging National Waterway–2 and the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route, IWAI has once again demonstrated the strategic importance of waterways in supporting industrial development and enhancing multimodal connectivity in the Northeast region.
The latest shipment adds to a series of successful ODC movements facilitated by IWAI and further reinforces NW-2’s position as a key logistics artery for Assam and the broader eastern corridor.
