The Government of Kerala has signed a series of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with central public sector undertakings (PSUs) to advance works and associated infrastructure for the ₹2,000 crore Vizhinjam port initiative, reinforcing efforts to position the deep-water seaport as a major transshipment hub.
The agreements are aimed at strengthening critical infrastructure, logistics connectivity, and allied facilities linked to the development and operational expansion of Vizhinjam International Seaport. Officials said collaboration with central PSUs will help accelerate project execution, mobilise technical expertise, and ensure timely delivery of key components.
Vizhinjam, strategically located near international east–west shipping routes, is designed to handle large container vessels with deep drafts, reducing dependence on foreign transshipment ports. The new MoUs are expected to support capacity augmentation, cargo evacuation systems, and other essential infrastructure to enhance the port’s competitiveness.
State authorities highlighted that the ₹2,000 crore initiative will generate employment opportunities, boost trade volumes, and attract ancillary industries to the region. With phased development underway, the government expressed confidence that Vizhinjam will emerge as a gateway for India’s growing container traffic and strengthen the country’s maritime infrastructure ecosystem.
The collaboration underscores Kerala’s push to fast-track port-led development while leveraging central institutional support to maximise the project’s economic impact.
