The shipping ministry has imposed a temporary ban on the movement of freight vessels and cargo boats during the upcoming Eid travel period to ensure passenger safety and smooth transit.
The restriction, which will remain in force during peak journey days, is aimed at reducing congestion on key waterways and minimising the risk of accidents as large numbers of people travel to their hometowns for the festival. Authorities said passenger ferries and essential services will continue to operate under enhanced safety monitoring.
Officials noted that waterways in several regions witness heavy traffic during Eid, with a surge in passenger vessels often sharing routes with cargo boats. Suspending freight operations is expected to ease navigational pressure and allow enforcement agencies to focus on crowd management and compliance checks.
Port and inland waterway authorities have been instructed to coordinate with vessel operators and ensure timely dissemination of the directive. Freight operators have been advised to reschedule sailings and adjust logistics plans accordingly.
The ministry emphasised that the measure is precautionary and temporary, with normal cargo movement to resume once the high-volume travel period concludes.
