Associated Containers Terminal Limited (ACTL), Samba, has successfully handled the first-ever steel rake of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) for customers Patel Engineering and C S Constructions, marking a significant step in strengthening rail-based logistics infrastructure in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir.
The operation was executed through coordinated efforts among multiple stakeholders, including SAIL officials, Indian Railways representatives, and the customer organizations. ACTL credited the seamless movement of the rake to close collaboration between logistics, rail, and industry partners.
According to Jitender Khanna, General Manager of ACTL, the initiative also received valuable support from the Directorate of Industries & Commerce, Jammu & Kashmir, under the leadership of Arun Manhas. The department has played an important role in promoting rail-based logistics solutions and facilitating industry access to efficient transportation infrastructure.
The rail movement is expected to significantly reduce steel transportation costs, generating savings for project stakeholders while improving the competitiveness of infrastructure and construction activities in the region. The shift from road to rail transport also aligns with the Government of India’s objectives of fuel conservation, lower carbon emissions, and the promotion of sustainable logistics practices.
Located in Samba, ACTL operates a rail-connected logistics park equipped with modern cargo-handling systems, mechanized equipment, warehousing facilities, and integrated transportation solutions. The facility is designed to support efficient cargo movement, reduce dependence on long-haul road transport, and contribute to the development of a cost-effective and environmentally sustainable logistics ecosystem.
The successful handling of the steel rake highlights the growing role of multimodal logistics infrastructure in Jammu & Kashmir and reinforces ACTL Samba’s position as a key logistics hub supporting industrial and infrastructure development in the region.
