Africa Global Logistics (AGL), a subsidiary of MSC Group, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) to act as a construction partner for the development of the new Bagamoyo (Mbegani) Port.
Under the agreement, AGL has been awarded the rights to design, construct and operate the first three berths of the planned 28-berth port. The Bagamoyo Port project will be developed in three phases, with construction of the initial phase expected to commence early next year.
TPA Director General Plasduce Mbossa confirmed that construction of the first three berths is scheduled to begin in early January. “We welcome more local and international investors to join the project, which aims to bring a major transformation to port operations in Tanzania,” Mbossa said.
The total investment planned for the Bagamoyo Port development is estimated at $2.1 billion. The initial three berths are expected to be designed and constructed over a period of three years.
AGL has been expanding its footprint in port development and logistics infrastructure across Africa, with ongoing and completed projects in countries including the Republic of Congo, Angola, Namibia and Ivory Coast. The investment in Tanzania is expected to further strengthen AGL’s access to multiple African markets, leveraging Bagamoyo’s strategic location along the Indian Ocean shipping routes.
Once completed, the Bagamoyo Port is expected to play a key role in enhancing Tanzania’s maritime trade capacity and positioning the country as a major regional logistics hub.
