The Aluminium Association has called on the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to introduce stronger safeguards against the increasing influx of low-quality aluminium scrap imports, warning that the trend could undermine domestic manufacturers, compromise product quality, and disrupt fair market competition.
According to the industry body, the growing volume of substandard scrap entering the country poses significant challenges for India’s aluminium recycling and manufacturing sectors. It has urged the government to strengthen quality control measures, tighten import regulations, and ensure stricter compliance with environmental and safety standards to prevent inferior material from entering the domestic supply chain.
The association believes that enhanced monitoring and enforcement would protect responsible recyclers and manufacturers while supporting the government’s broader objectives of promoting sustainable industrial growth and the circular economy. Industry representatives also emphasized the need for a level playing field, arguing that unchecked imports of low-grade scrap place compliant domestic producers at a competitive disadvantage.
The appeal comes as India’s aluminium sector continues to expand to meet rising demand from infrastructure, automotive, construction, renewable energy, and packaging industries. Stakeholders maintain that effective policy intervention will help safeguard product quality, strengthen domestic recycling capabilities, encourage investment, and support the long-term competitiveness of India’s aluminium industry.
