Sharjah Airport Authority (SAA) has outlined ambitious cargo expansion plans and showcased its advanced logistics capabilities during Air Cargo India 2026, reinforcing its strategy to position Sharjah International Airport as a leading regional air freight hub.
At the industry event in Mumbai, SAA officials detailed ongoing and upcoming infrastructure upgrades aimed at increasing cargo handling capacity, streamlining transit times, and enhancing multimodal connectivity. The authority highlighted investments in temperature-controlled storage facilities, dedicated pharma zones, and expanded warehousing space to cater to high-value and time-sensitive shipments.
Sharjah Airport currently handles hundreds of thousands of tonnes of cargo annually and serves as a key gateway linking Asia, Africa, and Europe. The expansion plan includes digital transformation initiatives such as smart cargo tracking systems, automation in handling processes, and paperless documentation to improve operational efficiency and transparency.
Officials emphasized the airport’s strategic location and strong connectivity within the UAE’s logistics ecosystem, supported by proximity to major seaports and free trade zones. The enhancements are expected to attract more freight forwarders, e-commerce operators, and specialized cargo carriers.
During the exhibition, the Sharjah delegation also engaged with Indian exporters, logistics providers, and airline partners to explore new trade corridors, particularly for pharmaceuticals, perishables, and high-tech goods.
Industry observers noted that the expansion aligns with rising cargo demand across the Middle East and South Asia, positioning Sharjah as a competitive alternative to other regional hubs amid evolving global supply chains.
The authority said phased capacity additions will roll out over the next few years, with a focus on sustainability, digitalization, and seamless customer experience.
