The Government of India has initiated efforts to develop Tripura’s Gomati River as an inland water transport corridor, aiming to strengthen connectivity and unlock economic opportunities in the Northeast region, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, said.
Speaking during his visit to Tripura, Sonowal said the initiative aligns with the Centre’s Act East Policy, which seeks to transform the Northeast into a strategic connectivity hub linking India with Southeast Asia. He emphasized that the development of inland waterways, alongside road and rail infrastructure, forms a crucial part of this vision.
“The Gomati River possesses significant potential to emerge as an important inland water transport route for the movement of goods and passengers,” Sonowal said, adding that the project would complement existing transport networks and contribute to the creation of a robust multi-modal logistics ecosystem in the state.
According to the Minister, Tripura’s strategic geographical location places it at the forefront of India’s engagement with neighboring Southeast Asian countries. Enhanced transport and logistics infrastructure would strengthen the state’s role as a gateway for international trade and regional cooperation.
Sonowal noted that improved waterway connectivity would facilitate trade, promote tourism, generate employment opportunities, reduce transportation costs, and support overall socio-economic development across Tripura and the wider Northeast region.
The initiative reflects the Centre’s broader commitment to integrating the Northeast more closely with national and international markets. Officials believe that the development of the Gomati River waterway, along with other connectivity projects, will position Tripura as a key logistics and trade hub in eastern India while expanding economic and people-to-people links with Southeast Asia.
The proposed inland water transport project is expected to play a significant role in advancing regional development and strengthening India’s connectivity agenda under the Act East framework.
