India is expected to maintain its position as the world’s largest rice exporter despite growing climate-related challenges, according to the International Grain Council (IGC). The council said the country’s strong production base, ample inventories and resilient export supply are likely to support overseas shipments even as weather uncertainties persist.

The outlook comes amid concerns over erratic monsoon patterns, rising temperatures and extreme weather events that could affect agricultural output across key producing regions. However, the IGC believes India has sufficient buffer stocks and production capacity to keep exports largely unaffected in the near term.

India’s continued presence in the global rice market is expected to help stabilize international supplies and prices, particularly for major import-dependent countries in Asia and Africa. The country’s export performance remains a key factor in global food security, given its dominant share in the international rice trade.

While climate risks remain a long-term challenge for agriculture, the IGC noted that current supply conditions indicate India is well positioned to sustain rice exports, provided weather conditions do not deteriorate significantly during the ongoing crop season.
