Cochin Port Authority celebrated Port Day 2026, commemorating 98 glorious years since the historic arrival of the first vessel — SS Padma — into the Inner Harbour of Cochin Port on May 26, 1928.
The occasion marks a defining milestone in India’s maritime history, symbolising the birth of modern Cochin Port and the transformation of Kochi into one of the country’s most important maritime gateways. The successful entry of SS Padma through the newly developed harbour channel laid the foundation for decades of trade, connectivity and economic growth along India’s southwest coast.
Over the past 98 years, Cochin Port has evolved into a strategically significant port handling container cargo, petroleum products, cruise traffic, bulk cargo and coastal shipping operations. The port continues to play a vital role in supporting regional commerce, logistics and maritime development in Kerala and South India.
The development of the port is widely associated with the visionary work of renowned harbour engineer Sir Robert Bristow, whose large-scale dredging and harbour engineering initiatives transformed Kochi into a modern all-weather port. These efforts also led to the creation of Willingdon Island, now a central hub of maritime and commercial activity in Kochi.
Port Day 2026 was observed as a celebration of Cochin Port’s enduring contribution to India’s maritime sector and its continued commitment towards sustainable growth, connectivity and operational excellence.
As the port approaches its centenary milestone, the celebrations reflected both pride in its rich legacy and optimism for its future role in strengthening India’s maritime economy and global trade connectivity.
