The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved rail multi-tracking projects worth ₹9,072 crore aimed at enhancing capacity and easing congestion across four states.

The sanctioned projects involve doubling and additional line works on key high-density corridors to improve operational efficiency and reduce travel time for both passenger and freight trains. The move is part of the Centre’s broader push to modernise railway infrastructure and strengthen logistics networks.

According to official statements, the projects will cover strategically important routes that connect industrial hubs, agricultural regions and major ports. The capacity augmentation is expected to streamline freight movement, lower logistics costs and support economic activity in the beneficiary states.

Railway authorities said the multi-tracking works will help decongest saturated sections, increase average train speeds and improve punctuality. The projects are also likely to generate significant employment during the construction phase.

With freight volumes on the rise and passenger demand steadily increasing, the latest approval is seen as a crucial step in expanding network capability and ensuring smoother rail operations nationwide. The projects will be executed in phases, with timelines and detailed implementation plans to be announced by the Ministry of Railways.
