Imabari Shipbuilding is taking steps to strengthen worker safety across its shipyards as rising temperatures and extreme heat conditions pose increasing risks to labour-intensive operations. The company is partnering with industry stakeholders and technology providers to implement measures aimed at protecting workers and improving on-site conditions.

The initiative focuses on deploying heat mitigation strategies such as improved ventilation systems, shaded work areas, and the use of cooling equipment and wearable devices to monitor workers’ health in real time. Training programmes and revised work schedules are also being introduced to reduce exposure during peak heat hours.

With shipbuilding involving physically demanding tasks often carried out in open or semi-covered environments, prolonged exposure to high temperatures has become a growing concern. Imabari Shipbuilding aims to minimise heat-related illnesses while maintaining productivity and operational efficiency.

Industry experts say the move reflects a broader shift toward prioritising worker welfare and safety standards, particularly as climate change leads to more frequent and intense heatwaves. The initiative could set a benchmark for other shipyards facing similar environmental challenges.
