The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has intensified surveillance and precautionary measures to safeguard Indian-flagged vessels and seafarers operating in the Persian Gulf region as geopolitical tensions escalate.

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal chaired a high-level review meeting to assess the evolving security situation across the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz, the Gulf of Oman and adjoining waters. The review comes amid reports of increased missile and drone activity, along with incidents of electronic interference, heightening maritime risks in the region.

The Directorate General of Shipping briefed the minister on the current status of Indian-flagged ships and Indian crew members operating in these sensitive waters.

Speaking after the meeting, Sonowal said the government is “closely monitoring the evolving situation” and has activated all necessary precautionary, monitoring and coordination mechanisms to ensure the safety and welfare of Indian seafarers and the security of maritime assets.

“We remain in constant touch with relevant national and international agencies and are prepared to respond swiftly to any emerging development,” he added.

As part of the enhanced measures, the Directorate General of Shipping has implemented real-time tracking of Indian-flagged vessels and increased reporting frequency requirements. Round-the-clock surveillance is being maintained through the MMDAC DGComm Centre, with mandatory reporting protocols issued to shipowners and operators to ensure timely information flow and rapid response capability.
