The Indian Navy is set to commission Androth, the second Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), at the Naval Dockyard here on Monday. The ceremony will be presided over by Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command.

Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata, Androth features over 80% indigenous content, reflecting India’s growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing. The vessel is designed for effective operations in littoral zones, enhancing the Navy’s capability to detect and counter submarine threats in shallow coastal waters.

A Navy spokesperson said, “Androth underscores our commitment to enhancing indigenous capability through innovative technologies and homegrown solutions. Its induction will significantly bolster our anti-submarine operations.”

The commissioning comes as part of a broader expansion of the Navy’s fleet, following the recent induction of warships including Arnala, Nistar, Udaygiri, and Nilgiri. These additions highlight the Navy’s focus on modernisation, operational readiness, and strengthening India’s maritime security posture.

The vessel’s high indigenous content exemplifies the spirit of Aatmanirbharta (self-reliance), combining Indian design expertise with domestic production capabilities. Androth is expected to play a crucial role in safeguarding India’s maritime interests while further enhancing the nation’s defence ecosystem.
