Congestion and operational bottlenecks at Jawaharlal Nehru Port are testing the resilience of India’s supply chain and logistics network, with cargo movement delays impacting exporters, importers, transporters, and container operators. Industry stakeholders said rising container volumes, yard congestion, and delays in evacuation have led to longer turnaround times at the country’s largest container gateway.

Logistics companies and trade bodies noted that the backlog has disrupted cargo planning schedules and increased transportation costs for businesses dependent on timely deliveries. Delays in container movement from terminals to inland destinations have also added pressure on trucking operations and rail-linked cargo evacuation systems.

Industry experts said congestion at JN Port could affect supply chains linked to manufacturing, engineering goods, textiles, chemicals, automotive components, and retail cargo if delays continue over an extended period. Exporters are also facing challenges in meeting shipment timelines, particularly for time-sensitive cargo moving to global markets.

Stakeholders have urged faster coordination among port terminals, shipping lines, customs authorities, rail operators, and transport agencies to ease congestion and improve cargo flow. Measures such as improved gate operations, better yard planning, and enhanced multimodal connectivity are being viewed as critical to restoring normal logistics operations at the port.

Despite the disruption, logistics players said India’s broader supply chain network remains adaptable, supported by alternative gateways, inland container depots, and expanding rail freight infrastructure. However, they cautioned that prolonged congestion at JN Port could impact overall trade efficiency and increase logistics costs for exporters and importers.
