Maruti Suzuki India Limited has achieved a global milestone in rail-based vehicle transportation, with its Gujarat manufacturing facility setting a new record for the highest number of cars dispatched via rail in a single year.
The automaker said its Gujarat plant moved a record volume of passenger vehicles using dedicated rail rakes, underscoring its push toward greener and more efficient logistics. The milestone reflects the company’s continued efforts to shift a larger share of vehicle dispatches from road to rail, reducing both transit time and carbon emissions.
According to company officials, the Gujarat facility dispatched more than 450,000 vehicles by rail during the fiscal year, marking the highest-ever annual rail movement from a single automobile plant globally. The record was achieved through close coordination with Indian Railways, expanded siding infrastructure, and optimized rake turnaround times.
The Gujarat unit, one of Maruti Suzuki’s most modern manufacturing facilities, serves both domestic and export markets. A significant share of the rail-dispatched vehicles were transported to port locations for onward shipment to overseas destinations, as well as to regional distribution hubs across India.
Industry analysts note that rail-based logistics offer substantial cost advantages and environmental benefits compared with traditional road transport. By increasing rail share in outbound logistics, the company is estimated to have cut thousands of tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually.
Maruti Suzuki has been steadily expanding its rail infrastructure footprint, including adding more railway sidings at plants and increasing partnerships with logistics providers. The Gujarat milestone is seen as a benchmark for the Indian automotive industry’s broader shift toward sustainable supply chain practices.
Company officials indicated that rail dispatch volumes are expected to rise further in the coming years as production capacity expands and export demand strengthens.
