India’s banana export sector is facing disruptions as ongoing tensions in the Middle East affect shipping routes and logistics operations, slowing the movement of fresh produce to key overseas markets.

Exporters say several consignments bound for Gulf countries have been delayed or rescheduled as shipping lines adjust routes and schedules amid heightened security concerns in the region. The Gulf remains a major destination for Indian bananas, with steady demand from markets such as the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Oman.

The disruption has also led to higher freight rates and longer transit times, creating challenges for exporters dealing in perishable cargo. Bananas require quick and temperature-controlled transportation, making delays particularly costly for suppliers.

Industry representatives warn that prolonged instability could impact export volumes and lead to financial losses for growers and exporters. Some traders are exploring alternative routes or adjusting shipment schedules to reduce the risk of spoilage and delivery delays.

India has emerged as a significant exporter of bananas in recent years, with shipments increasing to West Asian and South Asian markets. However, the current logistical uncertainties highlight the vulnerability of perishable agricultural exports to geopolitical disruptions and maritime trade risks.

Exporters are closely monitoring developments in the region while urging shipping operators and authorities to ensure smoother cargo movement to protect the supply chain for fresh produce.
