The price of green chili has been soaring in the local market for some time. The government decided to import green chili to balance the market demand.

The Benapole and Petrapole ports were closed for five days due to the Durga Puja festival in India.

After reopening on Monday, around 582 tons of green chili arrived in 50 trucks from India in a single day.

Importers have already cleared the shipment from Benapole port.

According to information from Benapole Customs, 28 importers in Bangladesh imported green chili worth approximately Tk3.34 crore on Monday.

The import price per ton is Tk60,000, with an import duty of around Tk36,000.

This translates to an import cost of Tk60 per kilogram and a duty of Tk36 per kilogram.

Masudur Rahman, revenue Officer of the Benapole Checkpost Cargo Branch, said: “As of 5pm Tuesday, a truck carrying 10 tons and 956 kilograms of green chili has entered the port.
