A US-flagged oil tanker was struck by projectiles while berthed at Port of Bahrain late on Tuesday, triggering heightened security measures across the harbour, maritime authorities said.

Preliminary reports indicate that the vessel sustained minor structural damage above the waterline following the impact. There were no immediate reports of casualties among crew members, and firefighting teams were deployed as a precautionary measure.

The tanker was docked for routine cargo operations when the incident occurred. Port officials temporarily suspended nearby vessel movements while security agencies assessed the situation and initiated an investigation into the source of the projectiles.

The development comes amid rising tensions in the Gulf region, which has seen an increase in maritime security alerts and insurance surcharges for ships transiting sensitive waters. The harbour is strategically located near the Persian Gulf, a vital corridor for global oil shipments.

US and Bahraini authorities are said to be coordinating closely to ensure the safety of maritime operations and prevent further escalation. Shipping companies operating in the region have been advised to review security protocols and maintain heightened vigilance.

Industry observers warned that such incidents could further elevate war risk premiums and freight costs, adding pressure to global energy and trade markets already grappling with geopolitical uncertainty.
