Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday announced that a consignment of bulk granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) has successfully reached Pandu Port in Guwahati from Kolkata through the India-Bangladesh Protocol Route.
In a post on social media, the minister highlighted the growing significance of inland waterways, stating that the Brahmaputra River is rapidly transforming into a vibrant trade and logistics corridor under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Sonowal emphasized that the government is focused on ensuring seamless cargo movement along National Waterway-2, which is expected to drive economic growth in Assam and the broader Northeast region.
Granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS), the cargo transported in this shipment, is widely used as an eco-friendly and high-performance partial substitute for cement in concrete. Its usage enhances durability while significantly reducing carbon emissions, aligning with sustainable construction practices.
