    Essar Group is pushing ahead with a comprehensive green mobility strategy aimed at decarbonising India’s heavy-duty freight sector. B C Tripathi, Advisor at Essar Group and former GAIL Chairman, said the group is creating a low-emission ecosystem spanning the entire freight value chain, from manufacturing clean energy trucks to establishing advanced fuel infrastructure.

    Over the past three years, Essar has shifted its focus to sustainable businesses, including operating a UK refinery and setting up large retail outlets. Its green mobility ecosystem integrates truck manufacturing through Blue Energy Motors, India’s largest LNG trucking fleet via GreenLine Mobility, and scalable LNG and future-fuel infrastructure through Ultra Gas & Energy (UGEL). The strategy combines LNG trucks for long-haul routes and electric trucks for short-haul operations, supporting India’s net-zero ambitions.

    GreenLine Mobility currently operates over 700 LNG-powered trucks across steel, cement, FMCG, and chemical sectors. The company plans to expand to a fleet of 10,000 LNG and electric trucks, supported by a $275-million equity investment led by Essar’s venture capital arm, Exponentia Ventures.

    Blue Energy Motors is developing electric trucks for urban and regional logistics, backed by battery swapping and fast-charging infrastructure integrated with UGEL’s multi-fuel hubs. UGEL has already operationalised six LNG refuelling hubs and aims to establish a nationwide network of 100 stations, covering 85 per cent of India’s long-haul routes, with a ₹900-crore investment underway across multiple states.

    Tripathi highlighted the importance of green freight, noting that heavy-duty vehicles contribute nearly 15 per cent of India’s carbon emissions and consume 40-45 per cent of the country’s crude oil. With India’s truck population expected to double by 2030, LNG and electric mobility offer scalable solutions that combine environmental benefits with commercial viability.

    Essar’s integrated approach demonstrates that clean freight can become mainstream with sustained private investment, industry collaboration, and supportive government policies, driving India’s transition to low-emission transport while supporting economic growth.
